In freshwater ecosystems, flooded terrestrial plants are a source of dissolved oxygen as they undergo photosynthesis, generating oxygen that can be used by aquatic organisms. Submerged aquatic plants are also a vital source of dissolved oxygen since they absorb carbon dioxide and generate oxygen through photosynthesis.
